"What We're Made Of" by Brett Steinberg
Review by: Caitlyn Mackenna

Upcoming singer/songwriter Brett Steinberg is a name that most people won’t know just yet.  I was lucky enough to be able to listen to his debut album What We’re Made Of before it was released and I was thoroughly impressed.  Even at his young age, he was able to do the smartest thing any artist can do: write about what you know.  His lyrics have proven that point through the words and the emotions portrayed in each of his songs.

It was easy to listen to this entire album.  I’m a big fan of artists such as Coldplay, Jack Johnson and Teddy Geiger and vibes of Brett’s music instantly reminded me of those three.  I was quickly hooked and I was so interested in the music that when the record ended I got a little upset because I wasn’t ready for it to be over!

Right away in track one, the title track “What We’re Made Of”, Brett starts off upbeat and the piano catches your attention immediately.  He continues on the upbeat road through track two, “Time to Move On”, and track three “Bitter Man”.  We hit the first ballad in track four, “Ammunition”.  I noticed that he uses a lot of falsetto in the first half of the record and while I didn’t mind it, I loved the back half of the album where he uses more

of the regular range of his voice and you can tell if was more comfortable for him because the vocal quality was much stronger.

My personal favorite comes almost at the very end of the record.  Track eight, “Where Did You Get That Smile From” had me hooked right from the piano intro!  The intro is reminiscent of one of my favorite Teddy Geiger songs and then as soon as Brett started singing, I couldn’t stop listening.  The lyrics were simple, but effective in showing his emotions toward whatever girl he was talking about.  I found myself humming this song for the rest of the day after I had listened to it for the first time.

Brett Steinberg is definitely someone to keep your eyes and ears out for.  He has a full list of shows available on his Facebook page!  Download the entire album FREE here: www.BrettSteinberg.BandCamp.com
